David Chiu takes the championship

David Chiu was the surprise winner of this week’s World Poker Tour World Championship, held at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. He took first place in the championship and an impressive $3,389,140 million, defeating Gus Hansen in the process. Hansen is one of the best poker players worldwide and started the game as chip leader, yet Chiu still managed to take him down. Hansen took $1,714,800 for second place.

Other players at the final table were Cory Carroll, Jeff King and John Roveto.

Hansen knocked out the other four players in record time, leaving Chiu at a 5-1 chip disadvantage. It looked like a sure thing, but somehow, Chiu managed to make a massive comeback. With a little luck, Chiu showed his true poker colours, and claimed the trophy.

David Chiu shot to fame when he won the World Series of Poker limit hold’em event in 1996, scooping almost $400,000 and his first WSOP bracelet. He went on to win three more WSOP bracelets in 1998, 2000 and 2005, taking his poker earnings to over $2 million.

Chiu got his first taste of poker when he took a second job as a dealer to pay the bills. Having previously owned a restaurant, Chiu discovered a taste and skill for the game and decided to make it his career.

The World Poker Tour has been going since 2002 and is now in its sixth season. Games are held in Barcelona, Niagara Falls, Connecticut, Atlantic City, Las Vegas and various locations in California. Broadcast live on television, the WPT attracts wide audiences from around the world. Previous WPT World Championships have been won by Carlos Mortensen, Joe Bartholdi, Tuan Le, Nartin De Knijff and Alan Goehring.

The last few years have seen slower participation at the World poker Tour, in part due to several big players boycotting the event due to a pending lawsuit. Pros Annie Duke, Howard Lederer, Andy Block and Chris Ferguson were some of the players who refused to play in the WPT due to the obligatory release form. They claim that WPT used pictures of the players without their consent. After a long drawn out process, the players have finally come to a settlement with WPT and will again be taking part in the annual tournament.
