The World Poker Tour ladies tour championship Final Table is scheduled for the 25th April in Las Vegas and is a platform for female players to show off their poker skills.

Some praise the tour for putting women players on the map, while others deny the need for a women-only event and prefer to play in mixed events. Many sports have separate events for men and women, but poker is a game where males and females are evenly matched and there is no reason to segregate – unless of course the male players are afraid of losing to a woman!

The upcoming WPT Ladies League championship has come into controversy over charity donations. The WPT decided that 15% of the prize pool will be donated to the breast cancer charity Susan G Komen for the Cure. However, some players have protested that in a professional championship there must be a valuable prize pool worth playing for, and if donations are mandatory, this should be advertised as a Charity event.

Reigning champion Susie Isaacs argues that an event should either be billed as a charity game, in which proceeds go to charity, or a championship for professionals, in which proceeds go to the winners. She explains that many players are trying to make a living from poker and they should be treated with respect. Her issue is the mandatory 15% taken from each player’s $1500 entry. Donations should be voluntary and it has been suggested that the WPT should donate the amount, leaving the prize pool alone.

Isaacs is quick to stress that she is not anti-charity and indeed considers this a worthy cause, to which she would happily donate 5% of her winnings.

If the predicted 300 players take part, $67,500 will be donated to the chosen charity, with the WPT donating just $5,000 from their own coffers. As Isaacs sees it, the WPT gets all the glory of the benefactor without contributing any of the cash.

Many high-profile players have said they will be boycotting the WPT event next week, since the event is not financially viable.

Top players in the WPT Ladies league include Evelyn Ng, Isabelle Mercier, Jennifer Tilly, Lolita Davidovich and Pamela Brunson.

Gambling movies are all around this spring. Hot on the heels of ‘21’, the story of the MIT blackjack team, comes ‘Deal’, a movie all about poker.

The movie stars Burt Reynolds as an old-time poker pro who gave up the game but comes back to teach rookie Bret Harrison the ropes. The love interest who gets between the two poker buddies is played by Shannon Elizabeth, of American Pie fame, who happens to be heavily into poker herself.

Due out later this month, Deal is set in Las Vegas, and begins with Reynolds and Harrison’s characters becoming firm friends over the poker table. The older player becomes mentor to the new guy, teaching him everything he knows to help him fulfill his dream. Playing together, they have a lot of success and take on tournaments across the country.

However, predictably, Las Vegas call girl Michelle gets in the way and the two friends fall out, only meeting again at the World Series of Poker – as opponents. This is probably the time when Reynolds regrets having shared all his poker secrets with the guy sitting across from him.

Several real-life poker pros feature in the film, including Chris Moneymaker and Phil Laak. The pros were drafted in to give an authentic feel to the WSOP scenes. Scott Lazar, who produced the movie and acted as poker consultant, made the final table of the WSOP main event in 2005.

Former model Shannon Elizabeth is also a seasoned poker player and has played in the World Series of Poker every year since 2005. She certainly brings some glamour to the world of poker, and has been sponsored by several poker rooms.

‘Deal’ is somewhat clichéd, but provides light-hearted entertainment and is a must-see for all poker fans.
