An exciting poker game is due to take place in the coming weeks, pitting the new against the old, the classic against the modern, the young internet poker player against a poker legend.
Doyle Brunson will face Patrik Antonius across the poker table in a heads-up tournament. Brunson allegedly challenged to play anyone for any stake at any variety of poker and Antonius – always in for a heads-up - decided to take up the challenge.
Doyle Brunson, also known as Texas Dolly, is seventy-five years old and has been around the poker block. Characterised by his famous cowboy hat, Brunson hails from Texas and has been playing poker professionally for over fifty years. The first player to ever earn $1 million in poker tournaments, Brunson holds 10 World Series of Poker bracelets. He is also the author of one of the most widely read poker books, ‘Super/System: How I made a million dollars playing poker’. This long-time champion has kept up his game with continual success from his 1976 and 1977 WSOP Main Event wins, until the present day. He has proved that age is no barrier, and still plays successfully in many cash games, as well as live tournaments. He also runs his very own poker website. Doyle’s poker earnings top $5 million.
Patrik Antonius is just 28, with a string of internet wins behind him. One of the growing number of Finnish professional poker players, Antonius’ wins include the 2005 European Poker Tour Baden event, and 2nd place in the 2005 World Poker Tour Five Diamond World Poker Classic in Las Vegas, winning over a million dollars. In all, Patrik has won approximately $2.6 million in live tournaments. He has been called the best Limit Hold’em player on the internet.
Patrik has received mentoring from poker pros Jennifer Harman and Marcel Luske. He is well-known up for his love of heads-up games and agreed to the Doyle Brunson challenge after meeting and playing against the big man.
It remains to be seen whether experience or innovation will win this battle of the titans. Brunson seemingly has the weight of experience on his side, with over 50 years of poker under his belt. He began his career when poker games were run by the mafia, whereas Patrik Antonius cut his teeth in the far cleaner and safer internet age. Antonius began playing in live games, and later turned to online poker where he made much of his money.
